Remedy That Works Wonders For The Back Ache

When it comes to treating low back pain we usually rely on pain relief drugs. However, pain relief drugs work for a short time and can cause gastric discomfort when taken for a prolonged period. Traditional treatments for back pain are usually more effective and safer than the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Among the various traditional pain relief options, castor oil is one of the oldest treatments that provide fast relief from the debilitating low back pain. Unfortunately, most of us know castor oil as a laxative and ignore this inexpensive remedy that works wonders for the aching back.

You Can Use Castor Oil In The Following Ways

1. Castor Oil Pack

In the European folk medicine, castor oil pack is applied to the painful area to reduce the pain. For the treatment you will need good quality hexane-free castor oil, cotton flannel, a plastic wrap, a bath towel and heating pad or a hot water bottle. Castor oil stains cloth. Therefore use old clothes and towels.

How To Do

Fold the cotton flannel to make it three layers thick. The folded flannel should be large enough to cover your lower back. Soak the flannel in castor oil. Lie down on your stomach. Place the flannel on the aching back. Cover it with a plastic sheet and put a hot water bottle on top of it. Cover the bottle with a towel to trap the heat inside. Leave the castor oil pack on your back for 30 to 60 minutes. Repeat the process once a day for up to 5 days.

2. Massage With Castor Oil

To treat low back pain, you can apply lukewarm castor oil directly to the painful area. Take a small amount of castor oil and gently massage the aching back with the oil. Leave it on overnight for best result.

3. Consume Castor Oil

According to Ayurveda, muscle and joint aches are signs of excess toxins accumulating in the body. To eliminate the toxins from the body, Ayurveda physicians recommend consuming a small amount of castor oil daily for a few weeks. However, castor oil should not be taken for a prolonged period. Long-term use worsens inflammatory colon diseases.

How To Take Castor Oil

Take a teaspoon of castor oil with a cup of warm milk before going to bed. In case of severe pain, take castor oil with ginger tea. Prepare a cup of ginger tea by boiling a one-inch piece of ginger in a cup of water for a few minutes. Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of castor oil with the ginger tea. Drink the tea before going to bed.
