A swollen knee may be the result of trauma, overuse injuries, or an underlying disease or condition. To determine the cause of the swelling, your doctor might need to obtain a sample of the fluid to test for infection, disease or injury.
Treatment varies, depending on the cause of the swollen knee, its severity and your medical history. Treatment generally involves pain medication and procedures to remove fluid from the knee joint.
HOME REMEDY FOR KNEE SWELLING
The first step is to rest the knee. Avoid sports and other weight-bearing activities for 24 hours or more to give your knee a break and a chance to heal.
However, it’s still good to gently straighten the knee and flex it multiple times a day. This will help the knee maintain a range of motion.
Don’t rest too much. Too much rest can weaken your muscles, which can worsen joint pain. Find an exercise program that is safe for your knees and stick with it. If you’re not sure which motions are safe or how much you can do, talk with your doctor or a physical therapist.
